Foundation Quick-Fix

Fix those Foundation Faux-Pas before Fall!
Find facts you might not know about foundation including tips about application and expiration;
for further info, click the links listed at the bottom.

Foundation + Lines & Wrinkles can make you look discolored and dried out.
The solution is simple, use less makeup on crow’s-feet and marionette lines; try to keep those areas clear and moisturized. Also, when your skin is dry, mature, or sallow you might consider using a luminizing foundation to diffuse the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

Powder + Peach Fuzz = Powdered Donut
When applying powder, sweep your face in the direction of your hair. When you go against the follicles it will create the perfect cushion to collect powder.

Airbrushed?
Start with a pea-sized amount of primer made with silicone to fill pores and lines to achieve an airbrushed look. Powder will help set foundation into your skin, but first try blotting a naked velvet puff on your face after applying foundation; it will absorb excess makeup, blend, and remove streaks.

Application Advice
Applying your foundation with your hands can transfer the oil on your fingers to your face. For a sheer look blot your foundation with a sponge because it will absorb foundation and lower the intensity. The most even look will be achieved with a brush--which brush depends on the consistency of your foundation (liquid vs. powder).

Foundations for the Season
Here are two great reason to change your foundation at least twice a year:
-Your skin color changes with sun exposure and weather. Chances are, your skin color is not the same in the winter as it is in the summer.
-Foundation, like most makeup products, expire; avoid using the same foundation for over 12 months.

Determining the Best Hair Style for your Face Type

Whether you are getting your haircut today or not for another few months, here are some tips to find the right hairstyle for you!
A Great Haircut Style will do two things for you:
  1. Minimize unappealing attributes about your face (as if there are any) and
  2. Promote your complimentary features

Oval Face Shape
TRY any shape and style; short, long, layered or bobbed but be sure to consider is which feature of your face you wish you avoid. Oval faces are complimented by height on top, wispy or side-swept bangs, and long relaxed curls.
AVOID hairstyles that cover your face or hang in your eyes, straight cut bangs, medium cut perms, or feathered long layers.

Round Face Shape
TRY volume at the crown and sleek sides. Hairstyles with height to give length to your face, also longer hairstyles have the same lengthening effect. The round face shape is perfect for a middle or off-center part, no bangs (or swept across--we want to see your widow's peak!), and straight or (VERY) soft curls.
AVOID volumed bob/short cuts that promote facial width; as little volume at the sides as possible! Bangs will cover your forehead and essentially shorten your face while accentuating width and roundness.

Square Face Shape
TRY soft, flowing, middle part, light layers. Medium or long hairstyles look the best. Wispy bangs and off center parts will accentuate roundness in a square face.
AVOID heavy bangs, strait hairstyles, center parts, and straight bob cuts.

Heart Face Shape
TRY a chin-length (or longer) bob, narrow bangs, and no volume on the sides. If you can add bangs, you can pull off most hairstyles! Long hair with lots of waves and fullness will be very complimentary.
AVOID bearing all by showing every inch of your forehead; no short hairstyles without bangs! You don't want height at your crown or slicked back hair.

Triangular Face Shape
TRY shorter hairstyles with waves or curls. Triangular faces are complimented by off-center parts, height/fullness at the crown, and tapering around the jawline. Layered hairstyles soften the jaw line. Shorter is better than longer.
AVOID long hairstyles, center parts, solid bob cuts, and too much height/fullness at the crown (we walk a fine line so lets not 'bump it').

Diamond Face Shape
TRY soft, draping, side swept bangs or side parts with gentle sweeping lines. Longer hairstyles tucked behind the ears or short pixie cuts, with a Diamond shaped face, most styles will look great on you with bangs!
AVOID cropped hairstyles with too much spike or height--you want hair on your neck and framing your chin. Also avoid middle parts that will elongate the face.

Oblong Face Shape
TRY long side-swept bangs and lots of side volume! Longer top layers and no height--for example the wedge and the graduated bob are very flattering.  Hairstyles that turn under or kick out between chin and shoulder length will add volume. All layered styles add body--try this with wavy textures. Oblong faces are the best for bangs!
AVOID straight, heavy bangs and sleek, slim sides and added height will only elongate the oblong face shape. No middle parts.

Having a hard time determining what haircut best suits your facial type? Consider asking one of our hair stylists for a consultation.

8 Foods for Better Hair & Skin

watermelon heart

8 Foods for Better
Hair & Skin

Beans Carrots Dark Greens Eggs Fish Green Tea Tomatoes Strawberries
1.       Beans—All beans and lentils are rich sources of biotin, iron, proteins, and zinc which make them amazing foods for hair growth! Beans are also great sources of Vitamin E and Selenium; vitamin E stimulates collagen and elastin production in skin cells while selenium improves elasticity and protection from sun damage—combined they will make your skin feel toned and youthful.

2.       Fish—Omega 3 fatty acids will help condition hair inside out; the result is shiny and hydrated hair making Fish arguably the best food for your hair. Omega 3s contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) which has been shown to increase the time it takes for skin to burn; enjoy that sashimi and sun protection. Nuts and specifically Walnuts can be a great alternative to fish because their good fats and oils are great for your complexion.

3.       Eggs—PROTEINS! Proteins help hair regain strength and elasticity. Eggs are also an excellent source of the mineral Selenium which has been shown to improve skin elasticity and protect from sun damage. Not into eggs? As an alternative try low-fat dairy products because they are rich in proteins. Also try whole grain cereals or garlic to increase your selenium intake.

4.       Carrots—Carrots are so rich in vitamin A that they will work wonders for hair and scalp. They will help maintain the natural balance of your scalp so there is no discomfort associated with excess shedding of the scalp or dandruff. Carrots are also rich in beta carotene—a nutrient that is known to help the skin protect itself from the sun.

5.       Dark Greens-Rich source of vitamin A and C; enjoy spinach or broccoli to live a dandruff-free life. These vitamins add natural shine and conditioning to your hair. Vitamins A and C stimulate collagen and elastin production in skin cells to keep your skin looking plump, textured, and toned. Kale and Spinach are rich sources of antioxidants to help battle the free-radicals that are aging and degenerating your skin.

6.       Green Tea—One of the greatest secrets to better skin: cut down on our caffeine because it leads to dehydration. Green Tea is the perfect way to cut down on the caffeine while improving your skin! Polyphenols are antioxidant compounds in Green Tea which help fight sun damage, protect from harmful rays, combat the aging effects of sun exposure and support the immune system.

7.       Tomatoes—Red fruits and veggies are packed with the antioxidant Lycopene. Like most antioxidants, Lycopene eliminates damaging free-radicals that would contribute to burning and aging of your skin. When you eat Olive Oil in conjunction with other lycopene-rich foods, it will help your body absorb lycopene (making your lycopene intake more efficient and effective) as well as boosting your natural SPF.

8.       Strawberries—Strawberries are really just the beginning of the larger fruit category. Strawberries will help protect your skin from sun damage and deliver overall better skin complexion. Strawberries are a great source of vitamin C (so are oranges, grapefruit, guava, papaya, and plums) which will help replace the nutrients lost during the day, sooth inflammation from sun exposure, and boost collagen production. The best fruits to go for are antioxidant rich—the brighter and more concentrated the color, the more antioxidants so reach for red, purple, and orange fruits to see results of better skin. Bananas and raisins are an amazing fruit pair: the B6 from bananas will keep hair follicles healthy while iron from raisins transport plenty of oxygen to the scalp to prevent hair loss and breakage while boosting hair growth.
Just so you know:
Antioxidants fight harmful chemicals known as ‘free radicals’ which make the skin look dull and tired.

Although many of these foods will help your skin's natural defences against sun damage, we highly encourage your continued use of sunscreen.

DIY Celebrity Hair with Runway Hairstyles

Do It Yourself
Celebrity Hair Care &
Spring 2012 Runway Hairstyles

SELF Magazine brings us these
  1. Hit snooze! Our best-on-damp-hair triple pony saves you blow-dry time. Make three tight ponies: one level with the top of ears, one level with the bottom of ears and one at the nape of your neck, says Neil Moodie, an editorial stylist for Bumble and Bumble in London, who created this look for Hervè Lèger by Max Azria's spring 2012 show. Lay the top pony over the middle pony, and wrap a hair bungee around the elastic of the second pony to fasten them together. Next, take those two ponies and secure them to the third in the same way. Done!

  2. Fresh from a run or fresh out of bed, start by shampooing—squeaky-clean hair is key for this style. Next, work a volumizer through towel-dried hair and blow-dry with a round brush to build volume. When hair is dry, use a large curling iron to loosely curl your ends, says Sam McKnight, a global ambassador for Pantene in London, who created this sleek-on-top, soft-on-bottom look for Jaeger London's spring 2012 show. Then comb a part in line with the arch of one eyebrow, and tie hair into a low pony on the same side as your part. Now mimosas!

  3.  Prep dry hair with a pea-sized amount of styling cream, then comb a slightly off-center part. Starting on the left side of your part, grab a 2-inch-thick section and roll it away from face, moving downward and gathering strands from your hairline as you go, says Nikki Ray, a senior stylist at Salon AKS in NYC, who showed us how to re-create the rolls from the Erickson Beamon spring 2012 show. Clip the coil at the base of your head, then repeat the roll on the right. After both sides are spiraled, pull out clips and secure pieces together with an elastic. Two days of cute hair? Check.

  4. Pull hair into a tight pony that sits halfway up your head, says Guido, a creative consultant in New York City for Redken who worked his magic at the Marc by Marc Jacobs spring 2012 show. Slick is the trick to nailing this style. Run just lotioned hands over any frizzy spots. Then flip the tail toward the top of your head and clip it in place with a skinny barrette about 1 inch above the elastic. Loosely flip the remaining portion of the tail back down, and pin it with a second clip about an inch below the elastic, creating a bunlike pouf.

All About Threading

Threading: The Perfect Hair Removal Technique
Before I tried threading, the perfect facial hair removal technique always felt so out of reach; at-home treatments are complicated and can burn or scar if you make a mistake while waxing and other spa treatments are expensive and leave blotchy red marks.

Threading seems to be the beauty secret that the whole world knows. It is inexpensive, fast, longer-lasting, and far less painful than most hair removal techniques. This ancient method of hair removal has so many names and origins, so why do we have so many questions about it?

Why Isnt Threading More Common?
First off, threading may be an ancient and common hair removal method, but in order for your local salon to provide threading, they have to hire a cosmetologist or aesthetician who is state-licenced to thread. Unfortunately it is still a relatively new hair removal technique in the western world and most American cosmetic colleges do not teach the threading procedure.

History
Threading is called 'khite' in Arabic and 'fatlah' in Egyptian. In ancient Persia, threading was a sign that a girl had reached adulthood and become a woman. Threading has been used in eastern countries for centuries and so the origin has become ambiguous.

How Does Threading Work?
Threading may seem like a simple or primitive hair removal method, but experienced technicians make it work beautifully. They begin with a loop of cotton thread that is about the thickness of dental floss [source: WebMD]. The practitioner holds one end of the 100% cotton thread in his or her teeth and the other in the left hand. The middle is looped through the index and middle fingers of the right hand. Then, they twist the loop to create a series of "knots" in the middle. Finally, practitioners move the twisted area rapidly back and forth across rows of unwanted hairs, trapping them at the root and removing them quickly and completely. No chemicals or other tools are needed

How is Threading Better?
Threading vs. Waxing, Tweezers, or Razors
Waxing, Tweezing & RazorsThreading
Waxing tends to burn, peel, and irritate the skin especially the skin around the eye.Threading does not use chemicals or artificial waxes, so there is no burning, peeling or irritation, and is good for getting rid of in-grown hairs.
Repeated waxing increases the chances of wrinkles, especially around the sensitive eye area.Threading can help pull out specific individual hair.
Tweezing and Razors increases the chances of in-grown hairs and cutting the skin.Facial threading is a dermatologist approved alternative to waxing and tweezing, especially for sensitive skin people who are on Retin A and accutane. Threading is generally considered much less painful.
Waxing, Tweezing, and Razors all make facial hair grow back thicker and faster. Eyebrow threading not only removes unwanted hair around your eyebrow but also helps to get a precise and defined eyebrow shape. Threading is more precise and the hair grows back thinner and slower.
For effective waxing, hair length needs to be at least 2/8".For threading they can be as little as 1/8" in length and sometimes even less!!

If you have any additional questions or comments about threading, or just want to share how well it turned out for you, add a comment at the bottom of the page!

61 Easy Ways to Lose Weight

A few years ago, one of my friends at Men's Health stepped on the scale and was horrified by the result. He'd somehow managed to pack 20 pounds of flab onto his previously skinny frame. When he looked into the mirror, he saw a fat guy staring back. He decided to make a change, quick.

That day, he gave up his beloved soda. He was only drinking two or three bottles a day, but over the course of six months, he dropped those 20 pounds. It was a small change to his lifestyle -- no big deal, really. And yet, it had a massive impact on his health and his body.

My point: Making small decisions each day can result in big-time fat loss.

Below are dozens of simple ways to lose weight. Start with one -- today! -- and watch the weight begin to melt away. Trust me, this is going to be easier than you think.

1. Have a clear goal. It should be one that anyone in the world can measure and understand.

2. Drink tea. Research suggests that those who drink tea -- black, green, or white, as long as it’s from real tea versus herbal tea -- have lower BMIs and less body fat than those who don’t consume tea.

Beauty Tips for Men

Beauty doesn’t have to be solely for women. Men deserve some pampering and beauty guidance, too. :)

Here are some of the most important beauty tips for men to keep in mind.

Nails
Manicured nails are definitely the way to go. A relaxing manicure will leave you relaxed and your hands attractive. If you are too afraid to venture out to your local nail salon, ask your mom, sibling or a female friend to give you an in-home manicure. To enhance your well manicured nails, a little bit of clear nail polish or varnish will help them stand out.

Skin
Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Hydrated skin is happy skin. Be sure to use moisturizer on your face and lotion on your skin to keep your skin hydrated.

Skin Cleansing
Add an exfoliating scrub to your daily shower routine. Clean your face with an exfoliating scrub to get rid of dead skin particles. Your skin will be smoother and as a bonus, shaving will be easier. Add an exfoliating scrub to your daily shower routine.

Teeth Whitening
Use a whitening tooth paste to help rid your teeth of stains left behind by coffee, smoking, tea and various foods.

Hair Care
Use shampoos that are gentle on your hair. Ingredients such as Vitamin E are great for naturally strengthening and conditioning your follicles.

Fall Beauty Tips

Fall is upon us and it is time to take those beauty steps to keep you fresh and flake-free during the cold weather.

Skin
As the weather changes, skin is exposed to dryness and chapping. Try a nourishing mask to keep your skin hydrated. With its high Vitamin A, C and antioxidant content, Pumpkin makes a great mask.

Hair
You may notice the trees shed their leaves, your head is shedding an increased amount of hair as well. Condition your scalp to strengthen your hair. Try oils such as Moroccanoil to nourish and replenish the hydrants in your hair.

Nails
Brittle nails and cold weather seem to go hand in hand (pun intended). Keep your nails filed to avoid snags that cause breakage. Don’t forget to keep your hands hydrated with a think natural moisturizer.

Body
If you aren’t one for exfoliating, you may want to start thinking about starting. The cold weather causes skin to dry faster and exfoliating gives way to new, fresh smooth skin.

Fall’s Top Runway Trends

There is no better place to find out what the trends are for the upcoming season than the runway!

This fall’s trends include bright lips and cheeks, loose and sultry hair and luscious lashes!

Here are the top looks for fall:

1. Floral Lipstick
Forget the darks of fall’s past. This year is all about going bright. Flower-colored lipsticks like carnation peach, petal pink and rose red are the “it” colors for fall.

2. Clumpy Lashes
Remember the bulky lashes of the 1960’s? That look is back. Layer on the mascara to get this eye-catching look.

3. Low Ponytails
High ponytails were so summer. Keep that neck warm this fall by wearing your ponytail at the nape of your neck or even lower. This look can easily go from day to night.

4. Strong Blush
Don’t be bashful when it comes to blush. Go for the reds and pinks to make a statement.

5. Metallic Eye Shadow
When it comes to metallic eye shadow, there is no rule. Wear it light or bold. Either way, all attention will be on your eyes.

6. Buns and Braids
The loose do’s of summer are carrying on into fall.  Hot looks include wearing a loose bun to the side and relaxed braids starting at the base of the neck.

7. Monochrome
If you aren’t the type to go over the top with pink lips and cheeks or bold eyes, then opt for the Monochrome look. Sometimes, just one color fits all. Use it on your eyes, cheeks, lips and even your lashes.

The Rules of Blush

  1. Keep it believable – Blush is meant to mimic a healthy glow. A general rule of thumb to follow is that roses are best for pale skin, apricots for medium skin and muted brick reds for dark skin.
  2. Find the right formula – Cream blushes blend in easier than other varieties of blushes and generally look a little more natural. However, cream blush is not suited for oily skin. Instead, for oily skin, try a gel blush. Powder blush is a great alternative for normal to oily skin.
  3. Learn proper placement – For the most natural look, begin blush application at the top of the apple of your cheek. Then, place the color on the part of your apple that lies directly below your pupil and blend outward toward the ear.
  4. Powder first – Even if your skin is not oily, a layer of translucent powder used as a primer for your powder blush will help the pigment go on uniformly and last longer.
  5. Layer if necessary – To prolong your color, first apply a little cream blush and let it sink in, then dust a bit of translucent powder over the area and finish with powder blush. This will help your color last for hours.
  6. Pick a finish – While matte blushes are ideal for oily skin, eliminating shine and staying in place longer, sheer blushes look best on very dark or very pale skin.

Try this modern twist on classic winged eyeliner, and blend the edges outwards.

Spider Lashes
LASHES LASHES LASHES. Whether you're gluing on falsies or using a great mascara, always opt for dram in the lash department.

Have a Beauty Emergency? Look in Your Kitchen or Medicine Cabinet

From bad hair days to broken nails, products in your household can save the day!

Keep these beauty emergency savers around for those “just in case” moments.

Hand Lotion
Work a pea-size amount of hand lotion through your hair to tame those frizzy locks. Make sure to concentrate on dry ends.

Olive Oil
Feed parched skin by rubbing a thin layer of olive oil over your skin after bathing. Don’t forget to pay special attention to dry, rough spots like those on heels and elbows.

Spoon
Yes, you read that right – a spoon. Relieve tired, puffy eyes by placing the back of a chilled spoon on each eyelid for up to two minutes.

Toothbrush
Instead of throwing away your old toothbrush, hold on to it and reuse it as a hair-dye applicator for root touch-ups.

Matchbox
Use the rough side of the box to file and shape the edges of your nails.
